Delenn Jumps for Joy!

Today, Mommy, Logan and Delenn went to the pool for an hour or so to
escape from the brutal heat. For the first time, Delenn jumped off the
side of the pool into the water (with her head half-submerging). She
enjoyed it so much she did it about eight times! It's great to see her
enjoying the water as much as our little fish, Logan. Logan spends the
majority of his time at the pool swimming around under the water --
diving for bean bag pool toys that we have.

Meanwhile, it's been a butterfly and bugs week here in the DingoDen. On
Monday (with Delenn a bit under the weather) we spent the day at home.
Logan and Delenn decorated some beautiful butterflies with sequins, bits
of tin foil and pom-poms. They are now hanging from the ceiling fan.
They went for a butterfly treasure hunt (and Logan had to put the
butterflies numbered 10 to 24) on the proper flower. When some friends
came over yesterday, we again did the treasure hunt, but this time hid
them more than a half-dozen times! This week we also made some
styrofoam bugs and painted rock bugs (and glued on googly eyes). Logan
is actually enjoying the arts and crafts as much as Delenn!

Logan is enamored by some jet movies that Daddy got for him (from the
Discovery Channel). Some of these documentaries actually have no
narration -- with lots of footage of Nighthawks, Harriers, F-14 Tomcats,
F/A-18 Hornets and other jets taking off, landing and doing other
assorted things (even shooting off missiles). Logan seems to be in jet
Heaven at the moment! Right now, he is very excited because he's going
to watch some old WWII airplanes -- and *might* even get to see his
current love, the P-38 Lightning. Maybe this airplane obsession is in
his blood as his Grandpa used to doodle drawings of airplanes in the
margins of his catechism study book! He then went on to be a propulsion
engineer who spent much of his career working on the F-35 Joint Strike
Fighter. He did much of the conceptual work. For example, he designed
the two-stage lift fans (located forward in the fuselage) and also
designed the aircraft with a three bearing swiveling nozzle which
provided thrust directed aft when flying and which rotated 90 degrees to
the vertical for landings. Grandpa also worked with the Air Force on
their F22 fighter. He was part of a government team that reviewed
industry designs for VTOL -- vertical take off and landing -- aircraft;
his team reviewed the designs from 5 different aerospace companies.

Back down on the ground, Daddy is sore and a bit tired after playing a
late game of soccer on Tuesday night (9-10pm). Other than that he's
doing well--after not getting sleep on Friday night as he cared for the
vomiting Logan. As always, he spends all his free time at home playing
with the kids and reading book after book after book to one or the
other. Daddy is always in great demand!

A Busy Week (Followed by new pictures below)

This past week was fairly busy. We did the normal array of activities
-- a playgroup on Monday, Nana Kath's on Tuesday, catching up with
friends at Squiggles on Wednesday, 3yr old kindy (his 2nd to the last
one) followed by time at the pool on Thursday and getting together with
friends and then having friends over on Friday. Plus lots of playtime
out back using the inflatable pool, water table, swing and trampoline.
Whew! And that's just the kid's activities! We adults had soccer late
Tuesday evening (9pm), a Valentine's Day party Wednesday evening and
Mommy had rehearsal for the Alexandria Quartet on Thursday.

This weekend for the first time in a long time, sickness has entered the
house. Logan spent most of Friday night throwing up and breathing hard.
Daddy was up with him all night caring for him. When Logan wasn't
throwing up, he was having restless dreams and shouting out "watch out
for the snake" and such. When Logan is sick, he seems to really think
about the words he uses. For example, at one point he said he wanted to
go lay on the bed where it's soft and warm and cozy. He thoughtfully
pointed out, "a movie will help me get better"! He seems to be on the
mend today (Sunday). Delenn has a very runny nose. Mom and Dad are
well but a bit tired.

We had a lot of fun earlier this week with some chalk games outside.
Mommy created a large chutes and ladders game in chalk that she played
with Logan. We also had a long, twisting chalk line with various
instructions to walk, jump, skip or hop at each new station. Logan and
Delenn both enjoyed that as well.

For several months Delenn has signed "potty" or "poos" whenever she
goes. Mommy always signs it to Delenn when she's in the bathroom as
well. Anyway, this weekend we pulled out the potty ring because Logan
was not feeling well. We explained to Delenn that when she was bigger
she would sit on the potty ring and use the potty as well. Who's for
waiting? Delenn immediately wanted to get up on the potty ring and
signed "potty" as she sat there for a while. She even grunted (was she
trying to go poos?). When she got off she looked in the potty for
evidence and put toilet paper in. She's done this several times!
(Remember she's only 16 months old.)

Delenn can be so cute (and compelling) with her signing. Now when she
wants something she knows to sign "please." For example, last night
when Mommy was on the computer she climbed up on the bed and was looking
at books. After a bit, she signed to Mommy "books" and "please." Who
can resist that? So Mommy promptly got off the computer and read for
her for well over an hour. Delenn will also sign "please" when she
wants Logan to give her something (which is often, as Logan will snatch
things from her at regular intervals). Unfortunately, we're not sure
that Logan notices Delenn's pleas of "please." We wind up doing the
translating (Delenn said please give it to me, Logan) -- and ask him to
look at her signing. She'll also sign "please" when she wants to chew
on the glue stick -- how horrible are we that we ignore the request and
put the glue stick away?

On Friday afternoon Mommy was going to take the kids to the Toy Library
for the first time in months. She was rounding up the kids telling them
to get their shoes on. Logan got very excited , "we're going to the
book library!" "Oh," said Mommy "Did you want to go to the book
library, Logan?" "Yes, I want to choose a new book." Mommy couldn't
believe she did this, but she actually convinced Logan *not* to go to
the book library and instead to go to the toy library (since the toy
library has limited hours and is not open Sat-Wednesday). We're all
happy to see that Logan loves books -- he really seems to love our
weekly treks to the library. For the last month or more, Daddy has spent
countless hours reading these massive jet books to Logan. On every
page, Logan asks, "what's that one and that one and that one?" Daddy
will tell him what it is and then they continue on to the next page.
Daddy's just a little tired of it and desperately tries to get Logan to
read a short story book at night too. At least during the day Logan
steers away from the jet books and likes to read a smattering of all
sorts of things -- both fiction and nonfiction. Most every meal, Logan
says, "I know, let's read the Magic Tree House book!" We're currently
up to book #15.

For a bit over a week, we started using a "stop whining star chart."
Logan's whining had become really quite annoying. For example, he'd go
on and on about not wanting to put on his pajamas or wanting more cereal
in his bowl (or wanting the Rice Bubbles *under* the sports cereal) and
so forth. Negative consequences weren't getting us anywhere, so we made
up a chart and told him that if he stopped whining he'd get a star.
When he filled the entire chart he'd get a prize. As we came closer and
closer to filling the chart, Logan became more and more excited (and
worked harder and harder at pulling himself together in those whining
moments). Finally, he did it -- and he is SO proud of his prize (his
P-38 Lightning, a WWII fighter plane). The great thing about it is that
Logan really understands what whining is. Identifying the behavior is
half the battle, right?

We have a new craft table that's about five feet long (it sits under the
overhang of the kitchen counter). Our friend had made it and passed it
along to us when he moved. We cut the legs down and now it's the
perfect height for Delenn and Logan to work at. Delenn spends a lot of
time drawing pictures and will now go over, pull the caps off the
markers and set to working on her master pieces. When Mommy and Daddy
ask her what her picture is, she'll often sign "snake" or "tiger." Then
we spend time being scared of the "snake" on the page. She laughs as
she puts her hand towards the snake and pulls it away.

For a long time, Delenn showed little interest in the TV or computer.
Having just added the word "computer" to her signing vocabulary, she has
suddenly gained an interest at using it as well. Her favorite website
is www.starfall.com.

We go to the alphabet area and click on a letter.
Then there are a series of pictures (with cute animation) -- for example
for the letter "D" there is a dancing doll, a duck, and a short little
movie about a dancing dinosaur. Whenever Mommy or Daddy try to sneak a
peak at our email, there's Delenn demanding to be "UP" so *she* can use
the computer! Delenn also enjoys the Baby Einstein videos now (and
continues to enjoy the signing videos such as Signing Time and Baby See
and Sign).

Delenn seems to show a pretty good understanding of letters. We have
alphabet letters put down on our hallway and kitchen floor with contact
paper . Delenn will go from letter to letter while Mommy or Daddy tell
her what each letter is. Whenever she gets to the letter "M" she always
identifies it correctly! (And it's not like she says "M" for every
letter she stands on!)

As we said last week, Logan just loves creating "submarine" or "rocket"
masterpieces out of cushions. He also spends a lot of time making
creations out of his K'nex or Legos. The only problem is that he won't
let Delenn come anywhere near them -- and will often dissolve into tears
if Delenn "ruins" it. Consequently, Mommy and Daddy have some intense
play time with Logan while Delenn is napping -- sitting on the little
chairs and taking rides deep into the ocean or up into space. Daddy
especially loves it when Logan creates a "bed" on the rocket/submarine
so he can lay down while Logan takes charge of the navigation!

We have just posted a number of new pictures this weekend--they appear
directly below this post (up through Logan's drawing of Alex and the snake).

We went to the Desert Park as a family
last weekend (Feb. 11). Delenn walked
much of the way. (Notice the cute outfit?
We got several huge boxes of hand-me-
downs from a friend. Delenn has more
clothes (by far) than Mommy!)

Delenn raced away from Daddy and Logan pushing the
stroller as fast as she could! (Actually, Daddy and Logan
watched the birds of prey show while Mommy took all
these shots.)

Jan 21: Mommy, Daddy, Logan and Delenn went for a long
bike ride. We went down Larapinta to Bradshaw, back to
Araluen Park and home... a ride of at least 2 miles. Logan
had a smile the entire way. Well done, Logan!

In mid-January we had a lot of rain. The Todd River flowed
several times. One morning, Logan, Delenn and Mommy
drove over to the casino area to check out the flowing water.

10 February 2007

Our friend's son, Alex V., was bit by a western brown snake
when they were out star gazing (Jan 28). Alex had been out of the
car for no more than 30 seconds as he went from the front to
the back of the car to climb up the ladder onto the roof to
stargaze. When he got home he complained his leg was sore.
There were two parallel scratches which his Dad suspected
was a snake bite. They went into the hospital and were told
that it was probably nothing (and the doctor said they could
go home!) His dad pressed for more tests and said that he'd
like his son to stay in the hospital. Sure enough, the tests came
back positive for snake venom. After two doses of antivenom
Alex recovered just fine and was running around two days later.
This is Logan's get well drawing for Alex. It's the first "person"
he's ever drawn.

Building a tower (Jan 18)

Family life in February

About a month ago, Mom was putting on her wedding ring after her soccer
game. Logan looked at the ring and asked what it was. She told him it
was a wedding ring and that it meant she was married to Daddy. Mommy
said to Logan "maybe some day you will want to get married." Logan
considered this for a bit. "Oh," said Logan "Someday I will marry
Daddy." Mommy then explained that usually boys marry girls and girls
marry boys. Logan thought about this and then said, "well then I'll
marry you and Delenn."

Delenn (now age 16 months) is quite adept at building towers. She will
stack up to nine block shapes (of similar sizes). This morning, she
worked on stacking boxes of various sizes. As she stacked, she started
to put a large box on top of her tower. She realized the highest box
was too small so she set the large box down and rearranged the blocks so
the largest one was on the bottom! We are really impressed! She also
is getting good at putting large beads onto a stick and stringing beads
onto the string snake.

Delenn continues to sign well and adds new signs daily. She has added
"thank you," "sorry," and "please" to her vocabulary. When we ask her to "use her
manners" (as we do with Logan), she will sign "milk please." At times
Delenn will start to whine when she wants something. Again, when we say,
"use your words" she'll use the proper sign instead (such as "please" if
she wants a toy from Logan or "eat" if she wants a dried mango slice,
"water" or whatever.)

When Delenn was watching a baby signing video a couple weeks ago, a new
word came up -- "clown." To do this sign imagine twisting a red clown's
nose on your face. Instead, Delenn devised her own sign-- putting her
finger in her nose and twisting. Yuck!

Before naps and at night, Mommy sings several songs to Delenn. One of
them is, of course, the alphabet song which Mommy also signs. One day
(Jan 25), Mommy came upon Delenn in the kitchen. She had pushed a
button on a fridge game that sings the alphabet song. She was swaying
and waving her hand about -- she was obviously signing the ASL alphabet
because she made a clear Z at the end!

As for speaking, Delenn spends much of the day saying "Mama" in just
about every tone you can imagine. She clearly says up, stop, cat, dog,
hot, uh oh and a few others.

Today at the library, Daddy told Delenn, "Go get a book and we'll read
it at the table." She grabbed a whole lot of books, so Daddy said,
"That's too many. Go put some back." Delenn picked up a book and put
each one back one by one. What astounded Daddy was that when she put it
back one book back, it was upside down and backwards. He figured he'd
fix it after she was done. But then Delenn noticed and she turned the
book around and also turned it right side up. She had placed the books
back neatly and side-by-side.

Last weekend was another first for Delenn. She repeatedly hit Logan on the
head with a sharp toy. Daddy picked her up and placed her in the naughty
spot. Delenn sat there and let out quite a wail. Then she had to say (sign)
"sorry" to Logan for hitting him. Delenn was quite upset, but Logan? He was
delighted. "She's old enough for the naughty spot!" he told Daddy again and
again. Later in the week, Delenn again was hitting Logan. Mommy said to her,
"Delenn stop hitting or you will need to go to the naughty spot." Delenn
marched off down the hallway. Then she started to cry. Mommy looked at
Logan and he looked at Mom. "I think she just put herself in the naughty spot."
"Yes she did," Logan replied. So after about 30 seconds (that's as long as
she's in the naughty spot at the moment) Mommy had her stand up
and say (sign) "sorry" to Logan. We had planned to wait until she was 18
months (when we started with Logan), but I guess she has a full understanding
of the naughty spot already. For some time now, she has been signing
sorry to Logan (when he's been in the naughty spot) and gives him a kiss back
when he apologizes to her.

Logan's imaginative play has really gone to the next level. Most every
day, he builds a "submarine" or "rocket" out of cushions, foam blocks
and small preschool sized chairs. Then he adds various things such as
round discs for the torpedoes, Lincoln log blocks for the guns, little
pom poms for the "buttons" to make the rocket/submarine go faster or
slower and so forth. Then we can spend up to an hour sitting in our
seat riding through the waters while being threatened by giant squid,
hammerhead sharks, killer whales, sea snakes and an occasional octopus or two!

It was nice to see Logan playing a really imaginative game with his
friend, Portia, as well. From what Kim and I could see, they were being
threatened by a monster and had to go hide in their rocket. Then they
got "guns" to "get" the monster and both ran around squealing and
warning us (the Moms) of the impending dangers that lurked around us.

Logan also is becoming quite the master at building things out of his
zoobs, Lincoln logs, kid k'nex, legos and so forth! He primarily builds
rockets and they always have guns (to shoot the other "naughty rockets")!

Logan is doing fairly well with his writing skills. While he's still
not overly keen on arts and crafts, he has been enjoying doing mazes and
most days practices writing his name at least once. He does not yet
write his name independently (Mom or Dad lightly write his name in
pencil and he writes over it.)

Several times a week we set up a treasure hunt for Logan and Delenn. It
started a few weeks ago when Mom set up a dinosaur egg hunt (plastic
Easter eggs with plastic dinosaurs inside), followed a couple days later
by hiding the letters in "dinosaur" and another day by hiding big
dinosaurs around and about. In the weeks since, we've hidden rockets,
race cars, letters, and rhyming words. Both kids enjoy it thoroughly --
and Delenn even finds them on her own now!

Our weekly activities have slowed down a bit as Kindergym and
Kindermusik are not up and running at the moment. (Hopefully both will
start up in April.) We often (though not always) go to a couple of
playgroups (Monday/Friday) and Logan goes to Nana Kath's on Tuesdays.
Logan goes to 3 year old kindy on Thursdays, but after much debate (on
the parent's part) we have decided to pull him out for the time being.
He often doesn't want to go -- and his behavior afterwards (whining and
general out-of-sorts-ness) is not pleasant. We also get together with
friends for playdates -- at the pool, Squiggles, and at our houses. We
still try to get out and ride bikes 3 or 4 times a week. Logan is quite
strong riding his big boy bike with training wheels. We still have swim
lessons every Saturday (for both Delenn and Logan). One of our favorite
activities is going to the town library (we often go after the pool on
Saturday because then Daddy can help out with Delenn since she enjoys
pulling books off the shelves). We always wind up with a huge bag of
books (15 books or so)--mostly non-fiction books. The majority of them
are about jet planes, space travel and race cars!

When Logan turned three, he started doing "chores" to help out in the
family. His jobs are to put the silverware away and to take his plate
and cup up to the counter after every meal.

Speaking of meals, after a long break (while we were trying to deal with
the difficulties of spoon feeding a baby) we resumed being thankful at meal
time. For us, this consists of holding hands, bowing our heads and having a
few moments of silence. Delenn finds this an important part of our mealtime
routine, insisting that we be thankful not just once, but three or four times
each meal!

As for Mom and Dad, we're doing just fine. The kids run us ragged
(primarily because Delenn does not sleep through the night yet. Yawn.)
We both play soccer on Tuesday evenings and Mom continues to play in the
Alexandrea Quartet. But all in all, the kids bring many smiles to our
faces and we are very happy here in the DingoDen.

There are a few more pics below as well.
