Dingoden Family Outback Yapper

Welcome to our Family blog. It will try to capture the various asundry activities of our mundane lives, but with an attempt at making it seem not quite so mundane.

On the Mend

Delenn had a terrible night last night. She was up every 15-30 minutes
throwing up all night long. Daddy took care of her most of the night
and got no sleep at all. Mommy went in for an hour or so from 4-5:00am
until Elora cried. Delenn was feverish, dry heaved and was obviously
sick all day today. Luckily she slept for most of the afternoon. This
evening, she asked for a bit of chicken and biscuit and ran around the
back yard with Logan. She seems much more energetic and is hopefully on
the mend now.

Logan enjoyed tennis camp again today. He did mention, though, that it
was long. Yesterday he asked Daddy why he had to be there from morning
til night (8:00am-10:30am!!).

I was pretty impressed with the reader that Logan chose today. It was a
"Scooby Doo Phonics reader" but listen to some of what he read: "...Two
ghosts came up behind Shaggy. "Boo!" said the ghosts. Shaggy and
Scooby jumped. "Zoinks!" Shaggy yelled. The ghosts held out their
bags. "Get those haunted bags away from me!" Shaggy yelled." ... Logan
still cannot read on his own because he stumbles over words, but not the
words you'd expect. For example, he stumbled over "bags" and "away" in
the sentences above. Still, he's really moving along, isn't he?!

Elora is our scooter girl. She crawls and scoots ALL over the place.
Today for some reason she did laps between where Mommy was standing (at
the sink) and the dining room three times. Perhaps she was brave enough
to move out of the room, but needed to hurry back to make sure I was
still there. She really zooms along now and comes crawling after me if
she didn't want to be set down.

Both Logan and Delenn are great with Elora. Logan can really make Elora
laugh hard. (Let me tell you, that's a WONDERFUL skill when she's
screaming her head off in the car!!) Logan often sits down to play with
her and is really very sweet with her. Delenn and Elora will play
together now too. Delenn will hand Elora things and direct their play
together. Unfortunately, Elora has this thing about Delenn's hair. She
likes to reach over and pull her hair (Delenn will often come and lay
down right near Elora). The thing is, Elora does it on purpose -- maybe
just to hear Delenn scream and holler. Hope this isn't a glimmer of
their future relationship! It's great to see Elora emerging as a
playful member of the DingoPack.

Logan's Turn at Tennis

Tennis Camp

Today was Logan's first day of a 4-day tennis camp (from 8am-10:30am).
He was a little nervous and wanted us to stay, but once we arrived he
hardly said goodbye before racing off to be with Bradon. His friends
Christian and Christina were there too. Logan seemed to have had a good
time. Logan said he was playing "skeleton ball" above. He had two tries
to hit the ball over the net; he would turn into a skeleton if he didn't get
at least one ball over the net. He said he never turned into a skeleton.

Unfortunately the morning was not so pleasant for the girls.
Elora had been up from 1am-3am throwing up. As we got out of the car,
she threw up all over the bags (including Delenn's bag of toys which
made Delenn quite sad). While we were there, Delenn played with Seth
and Connell. She kept saying she didn't feel well, but I thought she
was saying that because Elora was sick. About 10 o'clock, Elora threw
up and Melissa said she'd bring Logan home. I took the girls home,
bathed Elora and got her changed and settled when Delenn started to
throw up as well. Of course, I had to put Elora down which made Elora
upset. Anyway, it's been a busy/laundry filled day. Delenn is resting
in front of Peep (thank you Auntie Wendy and Uncle Joe!) and Logan has
been in good spirits with his morning activities, a play with some
neighbourhood kids, LaShay and Teegan, and lots of TV (the Christmas
Dinosaur -- thank you again Auntie Wendy!)

Elora seems a bit better -- and is even eating a little bit. Delenn still
isn't great (having thrown up twice in the past hour), but hopefully
it's just a 12-hour bug.

Summer is Almost Here!

While Mom and Dad did some chores outside, the kids enjoyed
splashing in the water. By the time I got the camera out, Delenn
was out and getting dry (she was in there the longest, but
I didn't think to get the camera til later). The temperature was
in the mid-90s yesterday.

Books and Bedtime for Elora

Mom reads Elora her favorite book -- Baby Chick's Day -- given
to Logan at his birth from Auntie Wendy and Uncle Joe. This
was Logan and Delenn's favorite book as a baby as well. Elora
grips the books hard and really tries to make the chick 'squeak.'
She also like touch and feel animal books as well (though not quite
as much as the chick book).

Logan and Delenn pulled out the dress up bin and put on
costume after costume today!

Kindermusik -- The Sunflower and the Bunnies

At Kindermusik today, the kids did a little skit
to the music. A sunflower seed was planted
in a garden. Then the rain came. The sun came
out and the sunflower began to grow. The bunnies
started to hop around the garden. Then as the
wind blew, the bunnies hopped around the garden.

School Time -- Math

We thought we'd share with you a little bit about our
school time with math.

We have a wonderful math curriculum called Right
Start Math. It is very interactive. We start off with
a math song... Yellow is the sun, 6 is 5 and 1; Why is the
Sky so blue, 7 is 5 and 2. Then there are lots of different
games and activities. We almost always use the abacus
and tally sticks to identify numbers and count.

The past few lessons have been talking about parallel and
perpendicular lines. I know Logan "gets it" because the
other day when we were camping, Daddy said "we should
park the trucks parallel so that we can put the tarp between
them." Logan overheard and said excitedly, "I know what
parallel means!" When I asked him what it meant, he was
able to explain perfectly.

We've also been talking about squares, rectangles and
triangles. Today's game involved the geoboard (that Logan
is holding in the picture above.) He liked it so much that he
asked to play with the geoboard for the rest of quiet time
and made the design below.

Delenn always comes in (and I mean always!) and says,
"I want to do math!" Above, Delenn is using the abacus to
count out three beads. She finds the activities fun too!
Sometimes I switch back and forth between Logan and
Delenn, taking turns at the activities and sometimes (like
today) I work with each of them separately.

Pictures from June, July and August

In addition to our latest trip to Jemtree this past weekend, we posted
some pictures from June (in New Jersey), July (in Missouri and Colorado)
and August (Logan's birthday party). Feel free to scroll down below.

Wednesdays--Field Trip Day...

Most Wednesdays we try to do some sort of field trip out
and about. Last week, for example, we went to the Desert
Park. One week we went out to Emily Gap to look for
bones. Another time we just went to a playground and had
a picnic. And a few weeks ago we went to see the high school
production of "Bye Bye Birdie" (though that was on a
Thursday). Three of the teachers involved in the production
are part of the Alexandria Quartet (where Mom plays the
oboe). They treated us as special guests placing "Reserved
for the Main Family" signs on chairs right in the front row!
The kids enjoyed the singing and dancing (Elora stayed
with our friend, Kristin.)

Today we went to the Reptile Centre again. We timed it so
the kids could hold the lizards. And once again we were lucky
that they were going to feed the crocodile when we were there.
They only feed him every 6 or 7 days (less frequently in the
winter), so we truly lucked out!

A Storm Came through Alice on Monday (Sept 22) and toppled lots of trees

including our neighbor's tree which toppled into our yard
smashing the fence. The power was out all around town.
Ours was out from 1:30pm until 7:30pm, but our friend,
Marg still did not have power a day and a half later.

We're Back!

After nearly 6 weeks without Internet (and 4 weeks without a phone) we're finally back connected to the world (for those of you who don't know -- they 'accidentally' cut off our phone service and living here where we do it takes the phone company a LOOOooooooong time to get phone service). Obviously we made it back to Alice, though you might have wondered with the long, long silence! The flight back was reasonably good considering that as we were unloading the luggage and kids at the departure area in Denver (on the way to LA and Sydney), Delenn threw up all over Mom-- in the hair, down my shirt, on my pants, etc. She was sick a bit more in the airport, but then was really good on the flights back to Australia. (And yes, Mom DID wash her hair in the sink and change clothes before checking the luggage in. I just wonder what TSA thought when they opened the bag with the vomit-covered clothes. Heh, heh, heh... revenge for the airport headaches we've had to endure!!)

Since we returned, Logan officially started Kindergarten. He has really taken off with his reading. He has gained a lot of fluidity (he reads one 16-page reader every day plus other stuff when it strikes his fancy). He reads to Delenn now (the Scooby Doo phonics books) -- it's very cute. He is currently working (almost done with) a bat lapbook and Mom has made arrangements with the park rangers at the Desert Park for a special session with the Ranger to visit the Ghost Bats there (and hopefully to see them being fed). As for the homeschool life, most every day we do reading, spelling, math, music and usually something else history/science/project related... and as always we read the kids lots and lots of books. Logan is currently listening to and enthralled with a fantasy chapter book series called the Secrets of Droon about a magic land under someone's basement stairs. As with many homeschooling families, "school" is integrated into fun-filled days of cubby-house building, trampoline jumping, ring swinging, cooking, arts-and-crafts, nature walks, treasure hunts and on and on!! Because we have to fit Elora's naps in each day has a slightly different rhythm to it. Mondays we have Kindermusik (see the pics and explanation below), Tuesdays we still go to Kindergym (Mom has been doing the training to be a gymnastics instructor), Wednesdays we often go out somewhere -- the playground, Emily Gap and today we went to the Desert Park, for example. Thursdays are usually low-key in the morning and Logan's Kindermusik class is in the afternoon. He asks EVERY day if it's "big kids' Kindermusik" today, so I guess he must enjoy it (or at least having a good play with his mates!). That said, he's been practicing some rhythms and playing the notes A and D on various instruments and has come a long way already. I've also noticed his singing voice is getting better and better (matching pitch with me -- especially when we sing our math songs--more about that in a second.) Fridays don't seem to have any particular program -- often we try to catch up with friends in the morning.

Now on to Delenn and Elora for a moment. Delenn really loves school time -- and fights tooth and nail for more time with Mommy -- playing doll house, drawing, doing stickers, play dough, etc. She's doing a lapbook on Curious George at the moment. The math curriculum we have (called Right Start Math) is very hands on and fun -- and she absolutely insists on doing math with Mom and Logan. She'll come running down the hall shouting, "I want to do math," regardless of what she happened to have been doing. I might add that she does really well with it, though she only works with the abacus up to about 5 beads. She can point and count to up to about 7 or 8 items without counting them twice or making mistakes. (Remember she's not yet 3.) She and Logan are also constantly trying to get Mom or Dad to play a board game called Adventures in Neopia (which has 6 games within the game). When Delenn is furiously mad at Mom or Dad for some reason she declares, "I won't play with you EVER again!" -- practically the worst insult she can imagine and come out with! Oh--and Delenn is now working hard on potty training. She's done well so far. We're trying to work with Delenn on making her speech clearer -- especially the "L" sound, "C" sound, and consonant blends. She says things like Dewenn, Aurora (Elora), tat (cat), frash (grass), tore (store), ream (cream), awhen (again), bobbin (bottom) and tuhtti (cookie).

Just before we came home (July 24th) we saw evidence of Elora's first tooth popping through (5 1/2 months). A month later (Aug. 26, 6 1/2 months) her second tooth started making its entry into the world. Abouth August 20th, Elora started getting up on her knees into the crawling position. At times she was very frustrated that she could do anything more than that. She'd rock back and forth and eventually start to cry. A few weeks later (Sept. 6th, 7 months), Elora got herself up onto her knees (praying position) using a box and the next day (Sept. 7th) we saw her go from a lying position to a sitting position just like a pro. She did it over and over again after that. A few days ago (Sept. 13) we noted that Elora was really moving forward in the semi-combat position. Just this week she has put the finishing touches on her crawling -- meaning that she can now use her arms and legs together to propel herself forward for a foot or so before -- CRASH -- she belly flops onto the ground again. Still, she manages to crawl after Mom slowly but surely (covering up to 10 feet in a few minutes). Elora has amazed us with her finger dexterity as well -- she's good at picking up cheerios, small rocks and leaves and anything else found around (um.... watch out for the game pieces in the board game mentioned above!!). And the last comment about Elora is that she makes it quite clear when she is all done eating using the sign for "all done."

Anyway it's good to be "back" in touch, we're going camping and fossicking (primarily for garnets) outbush for a couple days this weekend so don't expect to hear much from us. We did manage to post a few pictures earlier today.

The DingoPack is Back Online!

After 4 weeks without a phone and nearly 6 weeks without
Internet, we are finally back Online as of yesterday (Sept. 16).
We arrived back in Alice August 8th and have lots to catch you
up on. We have posted a few pictures of the kids just to get start
the website off again. Hope to steal a few moments now and then
to add some other pictures later.

Well, Elora is upset and ready for a nap and I promised to set
up a treasure hunt for Logan and Delenn so I'd better sign off
for now! Enjoy the pictures I posted below.

Elora is crawling! (7 months old)

After a number of weeks of getting up onto her knees (and
getting quite frustrated) Elora has finally mastered the art
of making her arms and legs move forward. She still plops
down onto her belly or nose much of the time, but she really
makes her way around the room quite quickly. Better clean
up that mess you see in the background behind her!!!

Kindermusik -- Imagine That

Our good friend, Jennifer, who was the kids' Kindermusik teacher
for the past year, got a job as a transition (Kindergarten) teacher
in August. We didn't want the kids to miss out on the Kindermusik
experience so Mom has stepped in as a Kindermusik teacher for
now with a few of our friends. This is the Imagine That class for 3-4
year olds on Monday mornings. We also do a Young Child class for
5-7 year olds where Logan and his friends are learning rhythm and are
learning to play the notes A and D on various instruments (with
the proper rhythm).

Father's Day, Sept. 7, 2008

Since we were in the U.S. and traveling about in June,
we didn't do a proper celebration of the American Father's Day.
Luckily for Daddy, Father's Day is in September here in
Australia so there was a second chance for us to pamper him properly.

In the bottom picture Logan is reading to everyone.
