1593 in Norwich County, Norfolk, England. Came over with his family on the Little James
in 1623 and became an important figure in the Plymouth Colony. His daughter Abigail married Henry Wood in 1644.

served with his father in the Jacobite army in 1715 (in the rebellion against the King of England), was captured, imprisoned
for 2 years and then transported to Virginia? (Hint: as crown surveyor of Spotsylvania
County, he taught surveying to George Washington) Lt. George Home (Hume in U.S.), b. 1698 at Wedderburn
Castle, Scotland.

is our only known English "convict"? (Hint: he was transported to Annapolis, Maryland
in 1719.) Thomas Goodrum, who arrived in Annapolis
in 1719 aboard the Worcester and served an indenture period of 7 years. He is listed
in Coldham's English Convicts in Colonial America.

had General Cornwallis station a detachment of troops at his house during the Revolutionary War with orders to capture him?

lived on the Yadkin River in Surry
County, North Carolina.

was the first white child born in Knoxville, TN? Sara King, daughter of Col. James King, was born there in 1792 when Knoxville
was still a fort.

introduced "Indian" blood into the family? We don't really know. But after years of research, it would have had to be Susannah Kelly who married James
Goodrum in Kentucky on March 13, 1809 (they were married by Jesse Head, the same Methodist Minister who
had married Abraham Lincoln's parents three years earlier). The theory is that Susannah's mother was an Indian squaw.
13. Which ancestor
fought in the War of 1812? We know of two: a) Charles Long, born in Maryland,
was a soldier in the War of 1812, was honorably discharged, and received a land grant in Kentucky
for his service; b) Granville Kennedy, born in Louisa County, Virginia, in 1798, enlisted as a youth in the War of 1812.
14. Which ancestor
ran off at the age of seventeen through the wilderness to enlist under General Andrew Jackson? Thomas Stringfield. An Indian bullet grazed his forehead
and he fell to the ground unconscious. General Andrew Jackson picked him up and
said "poor little Tommie… this buck is worth his weight in gold."
15. Which ancestor
was born in the Black Forest of Germany, came to the U.S.
in 1850 and, as a young man, worked on a Mississippi riverboat? George Volle, born in Baden, Germany in 1825. He emigrated to America in 1850 and abandoned
a naval ship to work on a Mississippi riverboat. His father Georg Volle was
a timber contractor in Germany and "made wooden pipes and tills."

was the author of several books? (Hint: she was named Virginia's "Mother of the Year" in April 1959.) Eula Lee Kennedy Long wrote at least 8 books (seven in Portuguese): O Companheiro do Lar, Conselho as
Maes, Coracoes Felizes, Maes de Homens Celebres, Exercicios Biblicos, Do Meu Velho Bau Metodista, and O Arauto de Deus; an
eighth book was a novel in English which was never published. She also wrote
a pamphlet entitled "Outlook in Brazil," published in 1942 by Friendship Press (NY).
