Logan's March-April Update (7 months & up):

Posted: April 3, 2004

This has been another month of milestones for Logan.  His personality has started to bubble through.  He has added some high pitch squeals and peeps to his communication repertoire.  When he's upset he vibrates his lips (just as we do to calm him!)

In a ten day span just as Logan turned 7 months old, three new teeth popped through his gums.  On March 7th & 14th he got his first two top teeth--central incisors.  Then on March 17 he added a third tooth to his bottom row.  As of today (April 3, 2004) he still hasn't gotten the other pair of his "lateral incisors" on the bottom. He was quite fussy in that period and his sleeping (which was never good in the best of times) was pretty broken in that stretch.

At his 7 month appointment on March 23, Logan weighed in at 19lbs 4½oz.  He is 68.5 cm in length (almost 30 inches). On the growth charts for boys, he runs a little below average for both height and weight.

Right around the time he was working on his teeth, Logan started to get up into the crawling position.  By the time he turned 7 months old, on March 15th he could make a bit of forward progress by reaching far forward and pulling himself along (combat style).  In the next few weeks after that Logan worked hard to learn how to get himself forward.  A lot of times he'd get into the crawling position and would launch himself forward in the "lame grasshopper maneuver"  (using one foot to help spring himself forward).  Now, about four weeks after he initially got himself into the crawling position, Logan is making steady forward progress.  He still plops to his tummy fairly frequently but somehow is getting himself in the forward direction.

Logan still loves to stand (and prefers this over crawling).  In fact, he'll often straighten his back legs (in the crawling position and raises his butt way in the air).  He still needs help to stand, but will often jump up and down (bending and straightening his legs).

In the meantime, Logan went through a week of separation anxiety.  He wanted Liesl near him AT ALL TIMES.  If Mom put him down, his bottom lip would quiver and if (GASP) she stood up to do something without him, he'd start to cry.  It made life difficult.  Logan spent quite a number of evenings in the sling while Mom prepared dinner!

As you might expect, Logan now eats three meals a day.  Mom still makes most of his food, but a daily diet might include

  • BREAKFAST: rice cereal with breast milk & applesauce or baby applesauce/muesli from a jar
  • LUNCH: pumpkin, split pea soup (made from chicken stock, split peas and green peas)
  • SNACK: yoghurt
  • DINNER: lentils, carrots, sweet potatoes.

Logan takes two naps a day -- one on Mom's (hour long) walk in the morning and one in the afternoon.

After taking a "Sleeping and Settling" class, we've started a new sleeping strategy -- putting Logan down for his afternoon nap while fully awake.  The first day was quite hard. Liesl had to go back into the room three times to read stories and calm him before he actually went to sleep (with many heartfelt sobs in between).  But after that we've noticed that he's started to put himself back to sleep a bit easier.  We're hopeful that that will help break the cycle of night waking.

Logan is quite the social butterfly these days.  He loves seeing new people and seeing new things.  He's pretty much always good out in public.  He's taken more interest in books lately and absolutely LOVES his Baby Einstein videos (especially the ones with animals and lots of puppets).  He'll laugh when the puppets do silly things!

Knowing his love of puppets, Liesl dragged out the Little Red Riding Hood, bad wolf and Three Little Pigs puppets from Grams.  Logan took one look at the puppets in front of him and burst into tears!!

It has been too cold to go to the pool the past few weeks, but Logan has still been enjoying his Kindermusik class.  In fact, he can now follow along in some of the activities ("Shake, shake, shake the rattle and stop").  He has big smiles for Cathie, the instructor when we're there! He loves the drum and enjoys dancing with Mom.

Believe it or not, Logan now plays "catch."  He'll throw a ball to Mom and she'll roll it back to him.  He'll do that quite happily for ten minutes or so!  He loves banging on things and likes to shake various rattles and things.  He loves his little tricycle and looks around as we walk through the neighborhood.

Logan is a bundle of energy, that's for sure!

That's about it for now!  We hope to get some new pictures up in the next day or so.

We hope to post some pictures soon.

YEEEeeee -- Translation: Logan says "I love you!"
