Logan at 18 Months -- Feb. 21, 2005

What a fun month. Logan's language is starting to blossom into meaningful conversations! One of the funniest conversations we had was at dinnertime the other night. At the end of the meal, Logan will often take his bib "out" (off). And then have us take his shirt "out" (off). Logan then proceeds to talk about his belly button, etc. Well, that night he pointed to his nipple and said "boo-boo" (boobies). Liesl said, "no Logan, those are your nipples. Mommy has boobies." He sat there for a moment, grabbed both his nipples, pulled them out as hard as he could and said, "MAMA!"

As for the number of words he knows, it's now no longer worth listing them out. He still adds a word or two most every day. He even seems to understand the concept of color (a bit) -- and knows the word 'purpur' (purple) and 'bluh' (blue).

One day, Logan was in the bathroom going through one of the shelves. Tony came in and thought he was trying to pull down the trash can (which is just up out of Logan's reach). Tony moved the trash can & Logan was then able to reach his goal. One of Liesl's barrettes (a larger one that pulls hair into a pony tail). Logan sat down on the floor with it and immediately started trying to clip his toenails!! (The funny thing is that he HATES when Liesl clips his fingernails & toenails!)

At times we'll find that Logan has thrown all clothes out of a laundry basket or storage bin (of outgrown clothes). He'll then get inside. He wants to be flown around like an airplane. Tony will pick him and fly him round the room -- up high, down low, just avoiding furniture & other objects (such as Mommy!). Logan laughs hysterically & loves his rides!

Logan has a new-found sense of imagination and humor. He'll take a large plastic spider or dinosaur and quietly come up behind Mommy or Daddy. He puts it on our back and goes "UHHHnnnn" to scare his parents! We of course scream out in horror and run away (with the dinosaur chasing after us!) Along those lines, Logan's favorite toys include trucks, cars, buses, dinosaurs, bugs and balls. The moving vehicles (primarily match-box sized trucks) are by far his favorite! He carries them around the house, holds them in his car seat and when we go for walks. He gets excited when he seems them "live" but also points them out on TV or on his shirt.

When Logan gets frustrated and starts crying, we generally tell him to "Use your words." He almost immediately stops crying and then says "up" or "out" (or gets frustrated because he doesn't have the words for it). Again, it's quite a break through in communication!

Bad news -- Logan has a cold.
Good news -- Logan lets us wipe his nose.
Even better news -- Logan can wipe his own nose.
Good news -- Logan can now blow his nose.
Bad news -- Logan mostly blows his nose by putting his two hands up to his nose (ie. Tissue free!!) A little gross, but we *should* be proud that he’s mastered a new skill!

Logan has started doing puzzles in earnest. His hand control has improved enough that about half the time he can put puzzle pieces in place himself (if they aren't up-side-down or whatever).

Logan had his 18 month wellness checkup and shots. It's been a while since he had been weighed and measured. At this point, Logan is 83 centimeters (32.6 inches) and is in the 65th percentile for his age. He is about 22 pounds which puts him at the 20th percentile. We don't worry much because he continues to be a great eater--eating most anything we give him including lots of fruit and veggies.

At the swimming pool: Baby pool Logan will now close his eyes, hold his breath and go under the water on his own. He also started putting his whole head under the water in the bathtub. Logan will also kick his legs and strain his arms forward to 'swim' towards a toy or to the edge of the pool Unfortunately for us, in another month or so the pool will close for the season. Hopefully he doesn't forget all the skills he acquired this season.

Well, that's about it for now!

Logan at 19 Months -- March 21, 2005

One of the best things about this month has been Logan's continuing ability to communicate. Just as an example, when Logan wants something he'll often fuss and cry a bit. We tell him to "use your words," which he usually does (answering "up" or "crack-uh" or whatever). One day, Logan was fussing in my arms. Liesl asked, "What do you want, Logan?" He answered, "I want, I want" and pointed at something or other on the counter. That was the first time he used the word "want" (as far as we remember) -- and he then continued to use that word in other contexts as well. There's no more writing of lists, he knows just too many words. In fact, he'll now repeat new words. "That's a candle. Can you say 'candle'?" And he'll repeat the word. Some of Logan's language abilities are not so pleasing--the loud: "MINE" -- as he snatches toys away from other kids -- is of course the best example of that!

Logan's obsession with shoes has if anything increased this month! The first thing he does in the morning is put on his shoes. Our friend lent us a cute pair of hiking boots for Logan which he absolutely loves. Logan has been trying hard to master the art of putting shoes on his feet. He occasionally manages to put on a pair of sandals, but a lot of the time he still gets the shoes turned around.

Logan's best buddy is Bradon (who is one year older). They spend quite a bit of time together as they both go to the same Family Day Care provider. Logan gets visibly excited when he sees Bradon or when we tell him we're going to see Bradon. Some of the time they play next to each other, but they also follow each other around, giggle and scream (despite our pleas to use their "indoor voices!"). Liesl was driving Bradon and Logan to day care one day when Logan said "truck." Bradon repeated, "truck." Logan then said another word. Bradon repeated him. Then Logan said "Dub-bah-dub-bah-dub." It was so hilarious to hear Bradon say "dub-bah-dub-bah-dub" too!

Logan has gone on a couple of "outback adventures" in the past month. One morning, Logan was woken up at 6am, transferred to a car seat next to his buddy Bradon and off we went to Trephina Gorge. We watched the sunrise on the way out of town and saw lots of kangaroo and cows along the way (both received equal admiration from the boys!!) We all had a great time walking into the gorge. The boys climbed on rocks and enjoyed playing in the sand.

Liesl and Logan also went on a special trip to Standley Chasm. Logan hiked the "whole way" into the chasm -- among cycads (ancient palm-like plants) and ghost gum trees. The hike [which included climbing on many boulders and logs along the way and stopping to investigate all the "spide-uhs" (spider webs)] was about two hours long. It took Liesl under 15 minutes to carry Logan the "whole way" back!!! Still, the other tourists were duly impressed with our little hiker!

Logan has begun to do a few basic arts and crafts. He still will color occasionally, but has added some very easy gluing and hole punching to his skills. He also likes to use play dough every now and then using the cookie cutters.

Logan has been taking hearty naps for the past several months. Generally he sleeps for two hours (or more) in the afternoon. We try to get him down to sleep around 1pm and often we wake him up at 3:30 or 4pm so that he'll go to bed at night.

Logan sits fairly well at mealtimes (he's still buckled in his chair, of course). He eats what we eat. No more special meals for him!

Some of the biggest news for our family as most of you know by now is that the IVF (FET--frozen embryo transfer) we did in January 'worked.' We are expecting a singleton in early October. We had the first ultrasound on Feb. 16 and have the next one on Wednesday, March 23. Liesl was quite exhausted for about a month and a half, but finally seems to be doing better. She still naps and/or goes to bed early once a week or so, but the overwhelming tiredness has let up. And, luckily, there was no morning sickness at all with this pregnancy (just that she has to be careful to eat regularly or she doesn't feel well).

Logan is quite aware of babies. He points to babies in their strollers. He knows to be very gentle with them. For example, he gives our friend's baby, "Baby Seth," kisses on the top of the head and hands him toys to play with. Hopefully that's a good sign for the future!

We'll see you again here sometime soon! Enjoy the pictures!

We'll be back to post some pictures in the next few days (hopefully)!
